Maternal and fetal heart rates, as shown below, can be extracted from the abdominal signal (shown above). The top trace, below in black, is the fetal heart rate trace obtained from a standard CTG Doppler ultrasound monitor. This monitoring technique only gives an averaged heart rate. The second trace is the beat to beat fetal heart rate extracted from the simultaneous abdominal recording using an early research prototype of the Monica AN24. It contains more information. The abdominal FHR data can be averaged to look like the CTG trace (third trace). The red trace is the maternal heart rate extracted at the same time from the abdominal data.
